FREQUENTLY ASKED QUESTIONS
Museums – Should I do the historical tour alone or in a group? What are the options?
I'm alone, with friends, or with family:
• I reserve a slot on the online ticketing system for adults, children… and babies too! (It's free for under 18s).
• With my ticket, I can freely explore the 15 rooms of the historical tour.
• No audio guide… but numerous multimedia features(30 immersive, fictional or documentary features).
• I can also reserve an activity (guided tour, workshops, concert, etc.) via the online ticketing system.

I'm with a group (adults, school or youth groups, etc.):
Guided tours, game tours, or workshop tours accompanied by a guide: reservation required during specific slots, limited spaces. Information and prices are available from the public services department on +33 3 81 99 22 57 or at mediation.musees@montbeliard.com.
Museums – What's on offer for a visitor with a family or a baby or for a foreign tourist?
For more sporty visitors: There are 260 steps within the Château's towers! An elevator provides easy access to the ground, first, and second floors.

Families: A fun game trail for young visitors, with 10 objects from the collections to find and decipher.

Babies: Changing area in the ground-floor restrooms; trail not accessible to strollers; baby carriers available on loan (subject to availability).

Foreign visitors: Texts and multimedia translated into English and German.

Pets: Not allowed in the museum! (Except guide dogs accompanying a visually impaired visitor).
Museums – What's available in the reception and shop?
Cloakroom: Handbags, backpacks, and helmets must be left in individual lockers, available free of charge; suitcases are not permitted (see "Planning Your Visit").
Shop: Magnets, postcards, mugs, cuddly toys, stationery, toys, novels, art books... a wide range of items for sale so both children and adults can take home a souvenir of their visit!

The museum does not have refreshment facilities.
Museums – What measures are in place to welcome visitors with disabilities?
Visitors with reduced mobility: Six rooms in the historical tour are freely accessible and comply with wheelchair accessibility standards. Other rooms are accessible to visitors with limited mobility (two or three steps). An elevator serves the ground floor, first floor, and second floor.

Visually impaired visitors: ramps facilitate passage through the numerous staircases. Twenty of the multimedia exhibits feature immersive sound features (actors introduce the space, a narrator documents a topic).

Hearing impaired visitors: Hearing loops are available at the reception and shop. The multimedia exhibits are designed with surtitles (in French, English, and German).

In 2025, the museum will offer additional explanations and facilities, particularly for visitors with intellectual disabilities. For more information, contact the public service at +33 3 81 99 22 57 or mediation.musees@montbeliard.com.

Admission is free for visitors with disabilities and for any accompanying adult mentioned on the relevant documents.
Reservations are strongly recommended via the online ticketing system.
Archives - Which archives are accessible? Who can access them and how?
Access to the archives is free and open to all. Registration is required at reception and proof of identity is required.
For more information, see the Reading Room Rules and the "Practical Information" section dedicated to welcoming the public.

The reading room is open every day, Monday to Friday (excluding public holidays), from 2 pm to 5:30 pm.
An appointment is not required to access the reading room. However, you can plan ahead by contacting the Montbéliard Municipal Archives by phone on +33 3 81 99 22 49 or by email.

Identification including photo is required for initial registration and for annual renewals.
Consultation requests are made after registering in the reading room. You can also plan your visit using the Montbéliard Municipal Archives search engine and email us the references you wish to consult.
For document preservation reasons, the maximum number of items (files, boxes, registers) that can be consulted per day is limited to 10 per person. Consultations are carried out one item at a time to avoid degrading the files.
A first visit to the Archives can be daunting. Welcoming and supporting users are particularly important aspects of being an archivist. All staff members are available to help users have an efficient working session.
Archives - How can I obtain a reproduction of a document?
Researchers who wish to do so may obtain photocopies in the reading room of unbound paper documents smaller than A3 format, provided that the operation does not pose a risk to the preservation of the original.
For any other reproduction, readers are invited to contact the Montbéliard Municipal Archives, which reviews requests on a case-by-case basis, taking into account the condition of the documents concerned, the number of reproductions requested, and the technical resources required.

Readers may also take photographs with their own cameras, without flash. Tripods and handheld scanners are not permitted.
Archives - The document I wish to consult is not available for consultation.
A document may be unavailable for legal reasons related to the time limit for accessing archives, for conservation reasons (poor condition), or because a digital copy is available for consultation. A procedure exists for requesting clearance to consult closed files.

Access to the original of digital or microfilmed documents:
The objective of digitising documents and posting them online is twofold: to allow access to as many people as possible, and to protect the original document from excessive manipulation.
Therefore, original documents that have undergone digitisation or microfilming are no longer available for consultation in the reading room except for special requests, particularly for documents which are illegible digitally.
Archives - Can I borrow books from the library?
The books in the Montbéliard Municipal Archives library, like the original archive documents, can only be consulted in the reading room.
